About Me

I am a mother, a grandmother, a social entrepreneur, an artist, a regenerative finance investor, a passionate gardener/cook/foodie, a marine educator, and an ocean protector who works through creative and community-engaged participatory work.  Respecting our elders, past and present, here in this learning space and throughout my individual life is a critical part of my leadership style. It is the journey I am taking as an emerging Matriarch.  It reminds me to exchange knowledge generously with you. Together we co-create opportunities for all of us to become good ancestors through the actions we take today, in all areas of our lives, through the multiple dimensions of our diversity.

My Accomplishments

I am one of two Matriarchs who co-parented a blended family which included 6 kids for over 30 years (and still growing!). I know a lot about how to maintain healthy relationships between mums and step-mums! I have helped to care for three aging parents and acted as the final death doulah for my father, my aunt, and two very close friends. I understand the impact of surviving cancer and not surviving cancer. I understand the impact that suicide has on the ones left behind in the aftermath. I have co-created a business from business plans on napkins at a BBQ while our kids ran around on the playground. I have pitched to hundreds of VC's and Angels (both helpful and not so much). I understand the pressures in building and exiting a company that dominated life for decades. I'm a Founding Director on the Board of the Canadian West Coast Climate Action Network, a community liaison with the University of British Columbia student-run Climate Hub, and a member of the JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Council of the youth-led Be The Change Earth Alliance. I'm a founding member of two multi-stakeholder cooperatives: Zebras Unite Co-op (global) and the Impact Arts Society (based in BC, Canada, where I also serve as the Executive Director). I'm a founding fellow of the Turtle Island Creative Impact Coalition, a gathering of digitally empowered creatives committed to preserving the land-based stories and traditional knowledge of the elders by connecting them with digitally-empowered youth throughout Turtle Island. I'm a 2022 nRhythm Regenerative Fellow and an Ambassador for the OpEd Project. I tell bad jokes, cook great meals, and dance wildly.

Ask Me

  • Ask me about the 5700 hours I've spent under the sea or the films that have been made with my underwater footage!
  • Ask me about co-parenting a blended family of 6 children in concert with our extended families, biological and non-biological. I've got 30 years of experiential knowledge under my hat!
  • Ask me what I'm reading right now and what recipes I'm preparing to match the characters or voices in the books. It's one of my favourite ways to relax with friends!
  • Ask me about my dog, kids, garden, latest film project, or community-engaged art practice.
  • Ask me for ideas or strategies for sharing compelling data-driven impact stories.

Why me

Why me? I've extended an invitation, so you needn't feel that you are "bothering me" or "taking up my time." Feel free to share an ask or an offer with me! I combine 40 years of citizen science field research with input from young and old formal and informal ways of knowing. This community-engaged and nature-based innovative research in visual arts, art history, and visual culture is holistic, nodal, and wildly exciting. Braiding gender-informed climate justice work into an anti-racist social enterprise career requires weaving together broken network threads and vastly different but intersectional relationships. This simple yet nuanced and regenerative approach creates opportunities for trust to develop. As an entrepreneur and investor, I can prioritize the learning and unlearn involved in equitable and sustainable practices. I am fortunate to be able to use the art of visually immersive, data-informed storytelling to amplify unique and fiercely mutualistic practices worldwide. By working across geographies, traditions, and cultural norms while living in and co-creating with and for the communities, I am better able to serve. As my praxis chips away at historic siloes that separate the technical, artistic, and research-based non-profit and for-profit social enterprise changemakers, I work to uplift joy and curiosity in others and myself. As a somatic documentarian who imagines a future where the emphasis is placed on mutual aid, reciprocal accountability to each other, and commitment to the planet, I hope that we continue learning from and inspiring global youth who draw strength in the face of trauma by growing and thriving in communities of care.

Fun Facts

* I love to snowblade while dancing to streaming music on a beautiful day. * I am a trained coxen and love to row in singles, doubles, quads and eights. * My favorite frozen beverage is a pear ginger sorbet I had once in Florence, Italy. * I like melted cheese on Apple pie * I have lived or worked in 54 different countries. * I eat popcorn at least 3 times a week. * I am a senior staff instructor for PADI. I teach scuba instructors to teach others. This includes being a disability diving instructor, and a technical, cave, wreck, and rebreather instructor.

My why

As I enter Elderhood, exchanging knowledge, giving and receiving the gift of connection and collaboration is the priority. Without relational leadership, indeed, deeply collaborative ways of connecting, we'll never have the resources needed to realize the best opportunities ahead of us in a regenerative life.

I enjoyed talking with Miah. She gave me helpful photography advice. She has also been coaching me as I switch from an E-commerce sales role to a Marketing position. I am grateful that I get to work with her.

As I joined the call, Miah greeted me warmly, instantly setting the tone for our conversation. Her friendly and unhurried demeanour created a comfortable space where I felt welcomed and encouraged to seek advice regarding my business. Throughout the meeting, she skillfully guided me, drawing from her own lived experiences and infusing the discussion with a touch of good humour. In a remarkably short span of time, Miah provided me with a wealth of practical and inspiring advice. Her insights and recommendations went beyond the immediate scope of our conversation, extending into valuable resources for further growth and development. She generously shared reading recommendations that had the potential to profoundly impact my business journey, showcasing her commitment to helping me beyond our initial connection. Miah's guidance not only equipped me with actionable strategies that aligned with my personal and professional commitment to reconciliation work, but also left me feeling motivated and inspired. Her ability to create a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, coupled with her vast knowledge and genuine interest, made our interaction truly invaluable.
