Introduction

Headline:

Lifestyle Business Consultant, Mentor & Investor

I am a(n):

Business Builder | Marketing Strategist | Connector | World traveller | Life long learner(always curious) | Health and wellness | Self Development | Human Psychology

What I do:

After building and selling two successful businesses over the course of a decade, I decided I wanted to explore myself and experience as much as possible - not just sit and drink margaritas on the beach all day.

Since Funemployment began June 2018, I've been committed to exploring my curiosities and passions: like, self-development, travel, taking classes (architecture, acting, singing, yoga, meditation, certified ski instructor, fitness, and others), research tons of businesses/industries, connected with many amazing entrepreneurs, attended the NBA finals, World Series, Okoberfest, and I even went to Burning Man!

I've reconnected and learned so much about myself during this year off (or actually a year ON might be a more accurate description) and feel ready, available and equipped to start helping others explore more of themselves either through starting a business, growing a business, selling a business, and how to do that while giving back / making a difference in the world.

About

Why me:

I know how to build businesses that prioritize play over work. I also love helping people explore, build and create and therefore am able to charge a fee that is not contingent on market-rate but rather contingent on a "I want to help more people" rate.

Lifestyle Business #1:
Ole Originals. est 2008 (www.OleOriginals.com)

Profitable:
Less than 2 months with excellent margins. Grew 15% to 20% year over year.

Sold:
June 2018 - was 100% owner

Scale:
Worldwide e-commerce distribution. 40+ retailers across Canada. 100+ designs.

Story:
Started in 2008 when brands like Ed Hardy were all the rage - tastefully designed, nicely fitted, and good quality t-shirts were difficult to find. All our designs were simple retro graphics and limited editions. Our retro graphics were inspired by travel, culture, wildlife, and the places we love across Canada. The shirts and tank tops are preshrunk, super soft, and made to last and they are still silk-screened by hand in beautiful Vancouver BC, Canada!

On to the next chapter:
I never thought when I started my tshirt line nearly a decade ago it would turn into an actual business. I had an idea, a vision, and I was super passionate about it. Hustled hard, listened to my customers / treated them like gold and everything just seemed to work out. I want to thank everyone that has supported, collaborated, and work with me / @oleoriginals over the last 10 years. It was a hell of a ride and couldn’t have done it with all you incredible people! Selling something you built from the ground up is not an easy decision, but it’s time to try something new and exciting. I’m extremely confident in the new owner/team and know Ole has a very exciting future!

LifeStyle Business #2:
Make it! est 2008 (http://makeitshow.ca/)

Profitable:
Less than 4 months with excellent margins. Grew 10% to 20% year over year.

Sold:
My 50% share of the company, in 2017

Scale:
Since 2008, Make It has grown to become one of the most popular and well-attended retail trade shows(Over 100,000 attendees annually) in Canada, with biannual shows in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary. This massive growth would have never been possible without the support, enthusiasm, and love from our amazing community. Each year, more and more conscious shoppers buy from our "Makies", which in turn allows them to do the work they love.

Story:
Make It was founded by siblings Jenna and Chandler Herbut. As makers themselves, they were inspired to create an event that their friends and peers would appreciate. Since the early days, Make It has been a platform for countless artists, makers, and designers to be able to sell their work to the public.

Lifestyle is more important to me than anything. I build businesses to suit my ideal lifestyle and I prioritize life experiences over anything else. I've never been super money driven - I felt life is most fulfilling when you're passionate about what you're doing, your values are aligned, and feel like you're making a difference. Leave the world a better place.

Back a few years ago my sister Jenna and I won Best Online Marketer at the 11th Annual Small Business BC Awards. We didn't win this award because we were necessarily the best at online marketing, we won because Make It was part of an amazing community with incredible support - everyone was on board and we built a marketing strategy around showcasing our incredible rockstar artists and why it's important to buy local.

I went to my first yoga class well over a decade ago and was immediately hooked! I think I love it so much because there are so many parallels to everyday life and in business. It's soo much more than just exercise.

For me yoga is self reflection on a spiritual level. No mater what I'm going through in my life, it allows me to be grounded, connect with myself, and let go if something isn't not serving me.

Just like in life your best results in yoga are when you're conscious - In balance, breathing, and being mindful as to what's going on in your body/heart/mind. They both require flexibility, patience, and sometimes we need to get a bit uncomfortable and have the mental strength to push through and surrender to it.

Yoga is about incremental improvements and building a foundation - We over estimate what we can do in a short amount of time, but underestimate what we can do in a long period of time. consistency is key! I've been doing yoga for many years, and no expert(yet), but the more intention we have when we do something, the better the results, and the more we grow.

Adventure and travel are extremely important to me and something I prioritize. This year I was fortunate to experience Burning Man for the first time. Each year Burning Man is given a theme. This year, the theme was Metamorphoses, as a celebration of change, and an exploration of uncertainty - and that it was.
I have always been intrigued by Burning Man and love what it stands for. I was presented with an opportunity to go only one week prior to it starting. I spontaneously booked a one way flight with no idea what I was getting myself into, but I knew it was something I had to do.
Someone asked me how I would rate BM 1-10 and the question is simply impossible to answer. In some ways it was a 10, in some ways it was super intense and challenging. I literally felt like I was on a different planet - complete sensory overload!
7 days in 100*F heat, only being able to sleep ‪3-4 hrs‬ per night, breathing in constant dust, only managed a few showers(they were out of order for most of the week), and loosing my bike and bag on day 2 was all a slight annoyance, but I now know it was all part of the experience. My intention for the trip was to be open, let go, simply enjoy the journey - and everything else would unfold. I really feel like I needed a bit of a test/challenge to get in that mind set. When I was able to fully surrender to the playa, is when I was fully able to embrace the true magic of Burning Man. I’ve never had so many meaningful conversations with complete strangers, or witnessed such generosity, kindness, love, support, and sense of community - it was a beautiful thing! My favourite thing to do was get on my bike and just explore, the possibilities are endless here. A truly a powerful journey. I learned so much about myself and left feeling very inspired. There is no place like this on earth and I feel extremely grateful I was able to experience it 🔥
